Глагол оскорблять передается на английский язык глаголами offend, insult, affront и outrage. Offend имеет значение 'обидеть, ранить чье-л. чувство' (часто ненамеренно): ненамеренно оскорбить друга – to offend one's friend unintentionally. Offend также означает 'неприятно раздражать': оскорблять слух – to offend one's ear. Insult, в отличие от offend, всегда имеет в 'виду обдуманное, намеренное оскорбление: оскорблять словом и делом – to insult by word and action. Affront означает 'оскорбить публично': оскорбить кого-л. в присутствии его сына – to affront a man in the presence of his own son.
