Жидкий кристалл (мезофаза, мезоморфное состояние вещества, анизотропная жидкость)Вещество, обладающее одновременно свойствами как жидкостей (текучесть), так и кристаллов (анизотропия). В зависимости от структуры молекул и способа получения жидкие кристаллы (ЖК) подразделяются на термотропные и лиотропные. Первый тип ЖК получают путем нагревания кристаллической фазы. Лиотропные ЖК формируют, как правило, из дифильных молекул при их растворении в ограниченном количестве растворителя, главным образом, воды. Важным свойством ЖК является их способность изменять ориентацию молекул под воздействием электрических полей, что открывает широкие возможности для применения их в промышленности. Термотропные ЖК обычно разделяют на две большие группы: нематики и смектики. В свою очередь нематики подразделяются на собственно нематические и холестерические жидкие кристаллы.Жидкие кристаллы открыл в 1888 г. австрийский ботаник Ф. Рейнитцер. Он обратил внимание на то, что кристаллы холестерилбензоата и холестерилацетата имеют две точки плавления и, соответственно, два разных жидких состояния — мутное и прозрачное.Russian-English dictionary of Nanotechnology > liquid crystal
