Прилагательному больной соответствуют английские ill и sick. Ill употребляется предикативно, sick – атрибутивно: to be ill with pneumonia, но sick man. Ill в атрибутивном употреблении имеет иное значение – 'плохой, дурной, злой' – и характеризуется ограниченной сочетаемостью: ill health, ill will, ill humour, ill manners. Sick в функции предикатива имеет значение 'испытывающий тошноту': to be seasick, to be airsick. Sick может употребляться в метафорическом значении 'испытывающий скуку, отвращение': to be sick of reading, to be sick at heart.
