Замкнутое хозяйство в рамках отдельной страны (см. Закрытая модель, Замкнутая (закрытая) система); как правило, создается в целях самообеспечения этой страны для ведения будущих войн — так поступали бывший СССР и гитлеровская Германия, готовясь к второй мировой войне. Полная А. невозможна даже для крупных и богатых ресурсами стран, поэтому обычно в литературе говорят об «автаркических тенденциях» в экономической политике, наиболее распространенной из которых является протекционизм. Исторический опыт показал, что они наносят невосполнимый ущерб экономике страны, отбрасывая ее назад в области научно-технического прогресса, экономической эффективности общественного производства и уровня благосостояния народа. Степень А. измеряют с помощью различных коэффициентов, в частности, отношения внешнеторгового оборота к валовому внутреннему продукту страны, доли импорта важнейших ресурсов в их общем потреблении и т.п.
