ADVENT или Adventure или Colossal Cave — старейшая известная компьютерная игра в жанре адвенчур. Первую версию в 1975 году создал Вилл Кроутер (англ. Will Crowther), программист и спелеолог. Основная часть лабиринта довольно точно описывает топологию некоторых из Мамонтовых пещер (англ. Mammoth caves) в Кентукки.

Первоначальная версия игры не сохранилась, до нас дошла версия 1976 года, написанная Доном Вудсом. С тех пор было создано не менее десятка усовершенствованных вариантов игры.

Игра имеет текстовый интерфейс, команды вводятся как предложения английского языка. Такой стиль интерфейса господствовал в жанре до конца 1980-х. Adventure стала прообразом и многопользовательских текстовых игр - MUDов.

xyzzy и plugh

Эти два «волшебных слова» переносят игрока в определённые места лабиринта. Слова xyzzy и plugh использовались в различных более поздних программах как метапеременные, пароли по умолчанию и с другими целями.

Maze of twisty little passages

В одной из частей пещеры находится «лабиринт из похожих небольших извилистых проходов» (англ. Maze of twisty little passages, all alike). Это выражение стало идиомой, обозначающей ситуацию, в которой никакие действия не приводят к видимому изменению поведения системы.

В другой части находится лабиринт из разных извилистых проходов (англ. Maze of twisty little passages, all different). Если внимательно следить за сообщениями, можно заметить, что они различаются в разных локациях:

  • Maze of twisty little passages
  • Twisty maze of little passages
  • Little twisty maze of passages
  • Maze of little twisty passages

и т. д.

Пасхальное яйцо

В одной из версий игры (для Atari 2600) можно обнаружить возможно одно из самых древних пасхальных яиц — скрытое имя одного из разработчиков, которое можно «прочесть», выполнив определённое действие.
