Сходил вниз, в подземелье церкви [ св. Павла в Лондоне ], где стоят гробы и лежат бессмертные, каков Нельсон и сам зиждитель храма - Врен. Здесь-то первоначально надписана над могилою известная надпись: "Si monumentum quaeris, lector, circumspice!"
Тут же в скромном уголке схоронен и зодчий св. Павла Рен (Wren). Говоря о статуях собора, я забыл упомянуть о памятнике, как многие забывают и взглянуть на него, потому что он не обращает на себя внимания ни аллегорическими фигурами, ни затейливыми орнаментами. Это простая мраморная плита, на которой только написано имя да год смерти Рена и прибавлено: si monumentum requiris, circumspice! (ты ищешь монумента - погляди вокруг!)
