Luis Aguayo (born March 13, 1959 in Vega Baja, Puerto Rico) is the current third base coach of the New York Mets baseball team. He is a former major league baseball player. An infielder, Aguayo played with the Philadelphia Phillies from 1980 to 1988. During the by|1988 season, Aguayo was traded for pitcher Amalio Carreno to the New York Yankees. As a free agent, Aguayo signed with the Cleveland Indians for the by|1989 season. Aguayo performed poorly, and was released by the team. His career batting average is .236.

On June 17, 2008 Aguayo was named the New York Mets third base coach.

Criticisms

After being named third base coach the Mets fanbase was surprised to see Aguayo named to the position as he had little Major League experience in such a role, and their fears were realized on several occasions as Aguayo ultra aggressive style led to poor results with several runners being thrown out, often by large amounts, at home plate. Often cautious when situations dictated aggressiveness and aggressive when situations dictated caution, Aguayo quickly gained disdain for his abilities from the Mets faithful.
