Strumpshaw

Strumpshaw

Strumpshaw is a village (population 602 [Office for National Statistics & Norfolk County Council, 2001. " [http://www.norfolk.gov.uk/consumption/groups/public/documents/general_resources/ncc017867.xls Census population and household counts for unparished urban areas and all parishes] ."] ) on the River Yare in Norfolk, England, within The Broads National Park.

The village lies a little distance from the river, on the slopes of Strumpshaw Hill, the highest area of land in the Norfolk Broads. Because of its elevation, Strumpshaw hosted, from the late 1790s through to the mid 1810s, a repeater station in the shutter telegraph chain linking the Admiralty in London with Great Yarmouth.

Strumpshaw Hall lies closer to the river, next to the railway line. It is the home of a Steam Museum, with a collection of engines, tractors and other items.

Strumpshaw Fen is a nature reserve in the care of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), and part of Mid-Yare NNR National Nature Reserve. It lies between the Yare and the Norwich to Great Yarmouth railway line.
