:"For the province of Bolivia, see José Ballivián, Beni"

José Ballivián (May 5, 1805October 6, 1852) was a Bolivian general during the Peruvian-Bolivian War and the 9th president of Bolivia from September 27, 1841 to December 23, 1847.

Born in La Paz, Ballivián's early military career is unknown before his defeat of Peruvian General Agustin Gamarra at the Battle of Ingavi on November 20, 1841 and halting Peru's invasion of Bolivia. A national hero following the battle, Ballivián was overwhelmingly elected the 9th President of Bolivia later that year. Unable to gain the support of the military, Ballivián was unable to restore a stable government in Bolivia and was eventually deposed in a coup on December 23, 1847. Fleeing to Peru in January 1848, Ballivián lived in exile until his death in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on October 16, 1852.
