The Dickenson County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) is the primary law enforcement agency servicing 15,903 people within 332 square miles (860 km2) of jurisdiction within Dickenson County, Virginia.

History

The DCSO was created after the county was formed in 1880. At that time, one person was appointed as the Election Supervisor, Tax Collector, and the Chief Law Enforcement Officer. Now the sheriff is a constitutional officer who is elected by the voters to serve a four year term.[1]

Organization

The department has 20 sworn officers and is headed by the Sheriff Bobby G. Hammons. Officers include Major Chief Deputy Andy Paul Silcox, Investigators are Scott Stanley, John Hall and Kenneth Hill. Deputies include Sergeant Jared Salyer, Sergeant Mike Stidham, Sergeant Chris Yates, K9 Deputy Wes Mullins and K9 Appco, K9 Deputy Matthew "coojo" Mullins and K9 Atticus, Deputy David Phipps, Deputy Bobby Edwards, Deputy Jeremy Fleming, Deputy Jeremy Osborne and Deputy Kelly Fleming. Courtroom Security are Terry Wallace and Tim Wampler. School Resource officers are Tammy Robinson, Jim Nichols and Chris Mullins. Office staff are Rena Powers and Teresa Robinson. The DCSO also has a host of Auxiliary officers and part time employees.[2]

The Department has a fleet of Ford Crown Victoria's and Chevy Trailblazers that are white in color with a brown and gold county emblem located on them.

Fallen officers

Since the establishment of the Dickenson County Police Department, 5 officers have died in the line of duty.[3]
