2) спортсмен или команда, регулярно не занимающие призовых мест, выбывающие из игры
3) лошадь, не оказавшаяся на скачках в тройке призёров, не занявшая призового места
2. 1) посредственность, заурядный человек; пустое место (в искусстве, политике и т. п.)
2) пренебр. вечный неудачник (о спортсмене, коне); первый с конца; пустой номер
