佛经称帝释的外将， 分别居於须弥山四埵， 各护一方， 因亦称护世四天王。 东方持国天王(名多罗吒)， 身白色， 持琵琶；南方增长天王(名毗琉璃)， 身青色， 执宝剑；西方广目天王(名毗留博叉)， 身红色， 执罥索；北方多闻天王(名毗沙门)， 身绿色， 执宝叉。 旧时寺庙山门两旁多塑四天王像， 身形高大， 面目狰狞， 又称四大天王。 俗称四大金刚。 参阅《法苑珠林》卷五三、《三界诸天会名》、《经律异相》卷一《四天王》。
