Nikkei Stock Average  -  ведущий индекс цен на акции, считается на основе  стоимости 225 наиболее ликвидных акций Токийской фондовой биржи первой секции , формула была разработана  американской  компанией Dow Jones & Co. В начале индекс считался на Токийской фондовой  бирже, но с 1985 года расчетами стала заниматься Nihon Keizai Shimbun Inc. Один из положительных моментов использования  индекса Nikkei Stock Average  сглаживание  для единичных непостоянных  событий, таких как  теоретическое падение  цен вслед за  ростом числа прибыльных акций, и облегчив отслеживание цен на акции в долгосрочном периоде.  225 акций, используемых для  расчета индекса,  обновляется  каждый год,  и при необходимости, заменяются более прибыльными, отражающие изменение рыночных условий  и  экономической ситуации.  Исторический максимум индекса Nikkei  был отмечен  в конце 1989 года  38 915,87 пунктов, а минимум 28 апреля 2003 года   и составил 7 607,88,  сейчас индекс постепенно растет.
