The Boeing XPBB Sea Ranger was a prototype twin-engined flying boat Patrol Bomber built for the United States Navy. While an initial production order for some 57 aircraft Bowers 1989, p.248.] was awarded to Boeing in 1941, to be built at a new, Navy owned factory at Renton, the order was canceled in 1942 so that the plant could be used to build B-29 Superfortress bombers. The sole example actually completed, which first flew on July 9, 1942 was nicknamed "the Lone Ranger". Bowers 1989, p.249.]
