SWEB Energy

SWEB Energy

SWEB Energy, formerly South Western Electricity Board (SWEB) was a British state owned Regional Electricity Company operating in South West England which was privatised by the Thatcher government. It was bought by Southern Company in 1995.

In 1999 it was split into an electricity engineering and distribution company called Western Power Distribution (which retained responsibility for the local distribution, metering and substations) and a retail energy utility that retained the SWEB brandname.

Western Power Distribution is now called WPD South West and is a subsidiary of PPL.

In 2003 SWEB was bought by French owned EDF Energy and the SWEB brand was discontinued on 5 June 2006.
