Родовой термин для большой совокупности литых железных сплавов, в которых содержание углерода превышает растворимость углерода в аустените при эвтектической температуре. Большинство чугунов содержит не меньше 2 % углерода, плюс кремний и серу и может содержать другие легирующие элементы. См. также высокопрочный чугун, ковкий чугун, серый чугун, пластичный чугун и белый чугун.
